Maureen served MSHA as President in 2009, and has also served as VP for Public Schools, VP for Continuing Professional Development, and has been a frequent contributer to MSHA conferences as a presenter.  She was instrumental in the pursuit of licensure for our state, and she spent many hours preparing and providing testimony to our legislators. One of Maureen's greatest accomplishment for our profession - and to MSHA - was her leadership and skills to produce and edit an exemplary document entitled  Michigan’s Speech and Language Guidelines and Suggestions for Eligibility, Service Delivery, and Exit Criteria.

Congratulations Maureen on this well-deserved recognition and thank you for your inspirational leadership of MSHA.

MSHA Healthcare Committee Outstanding Clinican Award:

Elwood Anderson, Ed.D., CCC-SLP, Practice of Speech Pathology of Alpena

Dr. Anderson’s long and storied 62 year career reaches back to the Detroit Public Schools in the 1950’s. After leaving the Detroit metropolitan area, he worked in the Alpena Public Schools.  For over the last 25 years, he has been in private practice providing service to a variety of health care organizations in the Alpena area, including the District Health Department No. 4 and Medilodge of Hillman who nominated him for this award.

The letters of nomination all spoke to Dr. Anderson’s passion for his work and his patients.  His dedication to expand his knowledge of treatment techniques is well recognized by his colleagues.  He was lauded for his creativity in using a “combination of traditional medically accepted treatments” and his willingness to research more “innovative methods”.

In our interviews, colleagues, staff, and families frequently remarked on the progress and positive impact he had on patients.  His services are sought out and specifically requested.   He has earned both patient and family trust with his caring, patience and gentle sense of humor.  His dedication to his patients is exemplified by his provision of pro bono services.   We were able to see that he is indeed beloved by many.  The nominations also noted his advocacy of Speech-Language Pathology as a profession and the encouragement he provided to others to return to college and consider a career in his beloved profession.  He is known for freely sharing his knowledge and expertise to area SLPs and other professionals.

Congratulations to Elwood Anderson, one of Michigan’s outstanding clinicians!
