The purpose of the SLP Healthcare Committee is to support and represent the needs of speech-language pathologists or audiologists working in the community, private practice, health care or medical settings. The SLP Healthcare Committee monitors and responds to issues affecting the provision of services in these settings.  In addition, the committee encourages and celebrates excellence in these settings through the conferring of the Outstanding Clinician Award.

We are always looking for new members for our committee!  We need input from a greater number of MSHA members from all areas of the state who specialize in adult or pediatric healthcare.  The committee meets four to five times a year in the Detroit area.  If you are unable to be present in person at the meetings, you can participate via conference calling and perhaps even Skype.   We plan on meeting in early 2015 with a conference call.

Please contact Carolyn at CDOTY@beaumont.edu or Julie at jeaman@dmc.org  if you are interested.

There is also a checklist to help clinicians make an organized transition to ICD-10-CM.

♦ASHA is pleased to provide the document: Essential Coverage: Rehabilitation and Habilitation Services and Devices to you and ASHA members in the state. The document can be used to explain the role of Audiologists and Speech-Language Pathologists (SLPs) in providing services to clients who require rehabilitation and habilitation services and devices for the purposes of education and advocating within your state to maximize coverage of member services. The guide contains the federally adopted definition of rehabilitation and habilitation and provides clinical examples of medically necessary audiology and SLP services under the defined benefit category. The new federal definition provides an opportunity to advocate for expanded coverage of habilitation services that have previously been denied.

♦ Please help the Michigan Speech-Language-Hearing Association (MSHA) spread awareness of aphasia by sharing the video What Exactly is Aphasia?   Volunteer committee members of MSHA have collected resources to assist others in sharing information with other professionals and consumers.

Therapy Functional Reporting Editing
Per the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS), standard system editing for Therapy Functional Reporting (THFR) claims has been revised. Providers should re-submit all THFR claims that may have been denied/rejected due to a missing discharge code. This is applicable to both original claim submissions as well as claim adjustments. CMS will continue to monitor the THFR reporting and will issue further instructions regarding THFR as necessary.

Meeting Dates:
October 8, 2015, 6:00 pm at Beaumont Health Center, Royal Oak.  For more information contact Carolyn Doty
