On April 1, 2014, President Obama signed into law the Protecting Access to Medicare Act of 2014.  This law included a provision that delays the implementation of ICD-10 from October 1, 2014 to October 1, 2015.

Beginning October 1, 2015, you will be required to use the new ICD-10-CM (International Classification of Diseases, 10th Revision, Clinical Modification) system, which will replace the current ICD-9-CM (9th Revision).  ASHA has developed the following resources to help audiologist and speech-language pathologists prepare for the implementation deadline.  Preparing now will help avoid potential reimbursement issues.  ASHA Resources for preparing for ICD-10-CM implementation.

On November 27, 2013, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) released the final Medicare Physician Fee Schedule (MPFS) and associated rules [PDF] for 2014.  The document includes regulations and rates for implementation on January 1, 2014, for audiologists and speech-language pathologists providing services to Medicare Part B beneficiaries under the MPFS.  Key policies addressed in the finale rule include the Physician Quality Reporting System and the therapy cap. 

Effective January 1, 2014, there are four new speech-language pathology evaluation codes related to fluency,speech sound production, language and voice and resonance.  These codes replace CPT 02506 (Evaluation of speech, language, voice, communication, and/or auditory processing) and have been included in the 2014 MPFS.
