EXPECTATIONS COMMON TO ALL POSITIONS:

Time Expectations:

  • Attend all regularly scheduled board meetings.
  • Attend scheduled board retreats, planning meetings, training workshops or other board development activities.
  • Attend, support and participate in special association events.

Obligations:

  • Fully understand and support the mission of the Association and bring personal or professional expertise (and that of others) to support the mission of the organization.
  • Complete an annual Letter of Commitment and accept and faithfully discharge the responsibilities enumerated in the "Responsibilities of Executive Board Members."
  • Review annual committee budget requests with the Treasurer and MSHA President.
  • Critically assess the MSHA budget and generate suggestions for maintaining a positive fiscal balance.
  • Monitor and identify professional issues, as well as state and national materials received, for concerns that may warrant discussion by the Executive Board.
  • Promote the interests of the Association and its membership in all activities and interactions.
  • Provide orientation to successor and coordinate the transfer of responsibilities.
  • Communicate with the membership as needed via Association newsletter.
  • Contribute information to the quarterly publication of the MSHA et cetera, as appropriate.

Terms:

All terms begin and end at the annual business meeting at the Annual Conference, per schedule delineated in the MSHA bylaws.

Job Description - President

Title: President of the MSHA Executive Board

Reports To:

  • Executive Board
  • All committees and board members have a reporting relationship to the President.

Role: To serve as the chief executive officer of the Association and an impartial voting member of the Executive Board for the organization, developing policies, procedures and regulations, monitoring financial performance and the organization's programs.

Term: One (1) year, beginning at the date of the annual meeting and ending at the date of the next year's annual meeting. This is to be preceded by one (1) year as President-Elect and followed by one (1) year as Past President.

Time Expectations:

  • Organize, schedule and preside at all regularly scheduled board meetings.
  • Organize, schedule and preside at emergency meetings of the Executive Board or any of its committees.
  • Act as advisor to any task force or committee needing support or guidance.
  • Act in ex-officio capacity on all MSHA committees.
  • Preside over and lead scheduled board retreats planning meetings, workshops or other Executive Board training or development activities.
  • Attend and provide leadership for all MSHA programs and initiatives, including the Annual Conference, Executive Board Retreat and Legislative Day.

Responsibilities:

  • Faithfully discharge the Executive Board responsibilities as described under "Responsibilities of Executive Board members".
  • Communicate with the membership via "President's Message" published in the Association newsletter.
  • As an impartial voting member of the Executive Board, the President shall be precluded from exercising the right to make motions or debate while presiding, and will refrain from voting except (i) when the vote is by ballot, or (ii) whenever his or her vote will affect the result (i.e., in the case of a tie). Per Roberts Rules of Order.
  • Represent the Association to the public and private sector; serve as liaison to other related professional organizations and to elected officials and state legislative groups on behalf of MSHA.
  • Monitor and coordinate all MSHA activities to ensure they are completed in a manner consistent with MSHA Bylaws.
  • Actively promote MSHA membership and its benefits.
  • Supervise and work with MSHA office personnel, including conducting performance reviews and oversee the functions of the MSHA office as needed.
  • Attend Council of State Association Presidents meetings and distribute information from that meeting as appropriate.

Job Description - President-Elect

Title: President-Elect

Reports To: President

Advisory Assembly Liaison To: Michigan representatives to the ASHA Advisory Assembly, MSHA appointees to state or national committees, State Education Leaders (SEAL), State Medicare Administrative Carrier (STAR), State Based Reimbursement Network (STAR) and the regional Members-at-Large.

Purpose:

  • To prepare for the responsibilities of MSHA President
  • To serve as a voting member of the executive board of the Michigan Speech, Language, Hearing Association, developing policies, procedures and regulations, monitoring financial performance and the organization's programs.

Term: One (1) year, beginning at the date of annual meeting and ending at the date of the annual meeting. This is to be followed by one (1) year as President-Elect and one (1) year as Past President.

Obligations:

  • Provide guidance and leadership for the development of MSHA long-range goals and association policies and procedures.
  • Assist the President as requested.
  • Prepare for assuming the presidency of the Association using all training and mentoring resources available.

Job Description - Past President

Title: Past President

Reports To: Board President

Advisory Assembly Liaison To: Committee on Ethics, Michigan Speech-Language-Hearing Association Foundation (MSHF)

Purpose:

  • To serve as a voting member of the executive board of the Michigan Speech, Language, Hearing Association, developing policies, procedures and regulations, monitoring financial performance and the organization's programs as described in the Association Bylaws and action of the Executive Board.
  • To assist the President with administrative and organizational activities of MSHA, as identified by the President.
  • To serve as liaison to the Michigan Speech-Language-Hearing Foundation (MSHF) and serving as a non-voting member of the MSHF Board.

Term: One (1) year, beginning at the date of annual meeting and ending at the date of the annual meeting.

Obligations:

Provide guidance and leadership for the development of MSHA long-range goals and association policies and procedures.

To provide input and guidance to the Committee Chair on Ethics and to promote mutually beneficial relationships between MSHA and the MSHF.

Job Description - Secretary

Title: Secretary

Reports To: Board President

Purpose:

  • To provide written account of all meetings of the Executive Board and the Annual Business Meeting.
  • To serve as a voting member of the Executive Board of the Michigan Speech-Language-Hearing Association, developing policies, procedures and regulations, monitoring financial performance and the organization's programs.

Term: Two (2) years, beginning at the date of annual meeting and ending at the date of the annual meeting.

Obligations:

  • Take minutes at all Executive Board meetings and provide copies of written minutes for review and approval by the Executive Board at each subsequent Board meeting.
  • Take minutes for Annual Business Meeting.
  • Amend minutes as needed.

Job Description - Vice President for Public Relations

Title: Vice president for Public Relations

Reports To: Board President

Advisory Assembly Liaison To: Public Relations Committee and Communications and Networking Committee

Purpose:

  • To facilitate public awareness of MSHA and issues pertaining to communication disorders.
  • To serve as a public relations resource to the MSHA membership.
  • To bring public relations issues of concern to the Executive Board for discussion and possible action.
  • To serve as a voting member of the Executive Board of the Michigan Speech-Language-Hearing association, developing policies, procedures and regulations, monitoring financial performance and the organization's programs.

Term: Two (2) years, beginning at the date of the annual meeting and the ending date of the next year's annual meeting.

Obligations:

  • Develop and carryout an ongoing marketing plan to promote the association, its mission, its members and the persons our professionals serve.

  • Investigate and implement the appropriate use of new medias, such as social networking, to improve public relations.

  • Coordinate the efforts of the Public Relations and Communications and Networking Committees.

  • Oversee the Committee chairs' training and mentoring for all public relations members to understand their roles within the committee and fulfill their responsibilities to the committee and membership.

  • Actively seek new members to participate in the Public Relations and Communications and Networking Committees.

  • Respond to questions and concerns of the membership relating to public relations and communications.

  • Oversee the development, coordination, and promotion of MSHA activities related to promoting the association and the professions.

  • Communicate with membership via articles published online, Association newsletter and via social networking.

  • Submit annual budget requests and manage funds allocated for public relations activities.

  • Assist the Vice President for Professional Development and Education in publicizing the MSHA Annual Conference and other programs as appropriate.

Job Description - Treasurer

Title: Treasurer

Reports To: Executive Board, Board President

Advisory Assembly Liaison To: Finance Committee

Purpose:

  • To manage all aspects of MSHA's financial interest.
  • To facilitate the flow of information and concerns relating MSHA's financial status.
  • To bring financial concerns to the Executive Board for discussion and action, as appropriate.
  • To serve as the Chief Financial Officer of the Association and a voting member of the Board of Directors for the organization, developing policies, procedures and regulations, monitoring financial performance and the organization's programs.
  • To facilitate the design and implementation of a long term plan for the financial stability of the association.

Term: Two (2) years, beginning (date of the annual meeting) and ending (date of the next year's annual meeting).

Responsibilities:

  • Manage all aspects of all MSHA financial accounts.
  • Coordinate with the MSHA office to submit monthly financial status reports for distribution to the Executive Board.
  • Respond to questions and concerns of the membership relating to MSHA financial matters.
  • Work with Advisory Assembly Finance Committee to oversee review of annual budget requests from each Vice President and Advisory Assembly Committee Chair and make recommendations to the President and Executive Board regarding the annual budget for the upcoming fiscal year.
  • Assist the Vice President for Professional Development and Education with Annual Conference financial planning as needed.
  • Provide financial guidance to MSHA Committees as needed.
  • Draw money from MSHA funds and make expenditures as authorized by the Executive Board.
  • Submit annual report to the Internal Revenue Service.
  • Identify financial trends and anticipate financial issues, proactively educating the Executive Board regarding these trends and potential financial challenges.

Job Description - Vice President for Legislation

Title: Vice President for Legislation

Reports To: Board President

Advisory Assembly Liaison To: Legislative and Regulatory Affairs Committee

Purpose:

  • To facilitate the flow of information and concerns relating to legislation which affects the practice of speech language pathology and audiology in the state of Michigan.
  • To bring legislative issues or concern to the Executive Board for discussion and possible action.
  • To serve as the legislative resource to the MSHA membership.
  • To serve as a voting member of the Executive Board of the Michigan Speech-Language-Hearing Association, developing policies, procedures and regulations, monitoring financial performance and the organization's programs.

Term: Two (2) years, beginning from the date of the annual meeting and ending date of the next year's annual meeting.

Obligations:

  • Guide the selection and employment of any lobbyists hired by the Association to accomplish its legislative agenda.
  • Work collaboratively with any lobbyists hired by the Association to accomplish it's legislative agenda.
  • Serve on MSHA's behalf as liaison to elected officials and state legislative groups.
  • Serve on MSHA's behalf as liaison to related professional organizations.
  • Organize, schedule and preside at all Legislative Committee meetings.
  • Actively seek members to participate in MSHA legislative initiatives.
  • Respond to legislative questions and concerns of the membership.
  • Communicate with the membership via articles published in the Association newsletter.
  • Submit annual budget request and manage funds allocated in the area of legislative activities.
  • Assist the Professional Development and Education Committee in identifying conference topics and speakers with a focus on pertinent legislative issues.
  • Assist in the coordination of MSHA's Legislative Day efforts in conjunction with the Organizational Committee for Legislative Day and the Vice President for Public Relations.

Job Description - Vice President for Membership

Title: Vice President for Membership

Reports To: Board President

Advisory Assembly Liaison To: Membership Committee, Committee on Student Affairs, Committee on Student Scholarship Awards, Member-at-Large Representing Students

Purpose:

  • To develop and implement a multifaceted plan to promote MSHA membership
  • To represent membership
  • To increase new memberships in all membership categories.
  • To maintain/increase the number of current members in MSHA.
  • To bring membership and student member issues and concerns to the Executive Board for discussion and possible action.
  • To serve as a voting member of the Executive Board of the Michigan Speech-Language-Hearing Association, developing policies, procedures and regulations, monitoring financial performance and the organization's programs.

Term: 2 years

Obligations:

  • Coordinate the compilation and maintenance of data sheets on membership status and distribute at Executive Board meetings.
  • Present names and credentials for Life Membership status to the Executive Board.
  • Send appropriate recruitment materials and applications to Michigan universities with SLP/AuD programs in a timely manner.
  • Prepare recruitment letters for non-members in conjunction with MSHA office staff.
  • Recruit new members prior to and during the MSHA Annual Conference.
  • Prepare annual report for the MSHA Annual Conference business meeting and other  meeting reports as needed.
  • Communicate with the membership via articles published in the Association newsletter.
  • Submit annual budget requests and manage funds allocated for membership recruitment activities.
  • Survey membership regarding satisfaction with MSHA membership.
  • Participate in the development of MSHA Long-Range Goals.

Job Description - Vice President for Professional Development and Education

Title: Vice President for Professional Development and Education

Reports To: Board President

Advisory Assembly Liaison To: Professional Development and Education Committee and Continuing Education Committee

Purpose:

  • To assume responsibility for all aspects of the MSHA Annual Conference and other professional development activities.
  • To facilitate the flow of information and concerns related to the Conference and Retreat to the Executive Board.
  • To bring issues of concern relating to Programs to the Executive Board for discussion and possible action.
  • To serve as a resource to the MSHA membership.
  • To serve as a voting member of the Executive Board of the Michigan Speech-Language-Hearing Association, developing policies, procedures and regulations, monitoring financial performance and the organization's programs.

Term: Two (2) years, beginning at the date of Annual Meeting and ending at the date of the Annual Meeting; one (1) year preceded by service as Vice President-Elect for Programs.

Obligations:

  • Mentor Vice President-Elect for Professional Development regarding duties and activities of the committee and the planning of the Annual Conference, Retreat and other Professional Development events.
  • Actively seek new members to participate in the Program Committee.
  • Respond to questions and concerns of the membership relating to Programs.
  • Sign and secure contract for Annual Conference and Retreat sites.
  • Solicit input from the Executive Board and membership regarding speakers for the Annual Conference.
  • Communicate with membership via articles published in the Association newsletter.
  • Facilitate coordination of all aspects and details pertaining to the Annual Conference, including meeting space, dining/refreshments, ground transportation, AV equipment, reservations and account billing information. Meet appropriate contract deadlines.
  • Identify and provide guidance to coordinators for educational tracks at the Annual Conference with assistance from the Vice President-Elect for Professional Development.
  • Promote attendance at the Annual Conference and Executive Board Retreat.
  • Collate and present results of membership satisfaction survey relating to the Annual Conference to the Executive Board.
  • Monitor the assigned activities of the Program sub-committees and provide updates to the Executive Board.
  • Submit annual budge requests and manage funds allocated for the program development activities.

Title: Vice President-Elect for Professional Development and Education

Reports To: Vice President for Professional Development and Education, Board President

Advisory Board Liaison To: Professional Development and Education Committee

Purpose:

  • To share responsibility for all aspects of the MSHA Annual Conference and Annual Executive Board Retreat and other professional development activities.
  • To assist Vice President for Programs in facilitating the flow of information and concerns related to the Conference and Retreat to the Executive Board.
  • To assist the Vice President for Programs in coordinating all aspects of the Annual Conference.
  • To serve as a non-voting member of the Executive Board of the Michigan Speech-Language-Hearing Association, developing policies, procedures and regulations, monitoring financial performance and the organization's programs.

Term: Two (2) years, beginning one (1) year serving as Vice President-Elect for Programs then one (1) year as Vice President for Programs.

Obligations:

  • Actively seek new members to participate in the Program Committee.
  • Respond to questions and concerns of the membership relating to Programs.
  • Solicit input from the Executive Board and membership regarding speakers for the Annual Conference.
  • Assist in coordinating all aspects of and details pertaining to the Annual Conference, including meeting space, dining/refreshments, ground transportation, AV equipment, reservations and account billing information. Meet appropriate contract deadlines.

Advisory Board Liaison To: Committee on Audiology, Committee on Public Schools and Committee on Community and Hospitals.

Purpose:

  • To facilitate the flow of information and concerns relating to professional standards and best practices in speech language pathology and audiology in the state of Michigan.
  • To bring issues of concern to the Executive Board for discussion and possible action.
  • To serve as a resource to the MSHA members and the community at large on standards of practice within the State of Michigan.
  • To serve as a voting member of the Executive Board of the Michigan Speech-Language-Hearing Association, developing policies, procedures and regulations, monitoring financial performance and the organization's programs.

Term: Two (2) years, beginning at the date of the annual meeting and ending date of the next year's annual meeting.

Obligations:

  • Service as a liaison for the committee on audiology, committee on public schools and committee on community and hospitals to ensure provision of speech language pathology and audiology services in accordance with the highest professional standards within the state of Michigan in all work settings.
  • Organize, schedule and preside at all Professional Services Committee meetings.
  • Maintain committee meeting minutes and send a copy to the MSHA office.
  • Respond to questions and concerns of the membership relating to professional standards of practice.
  • Provide documentation/reports detailing changes or concerns regarding professional practice in the State of Michigan, as necessary.
  • Communicate with the membership via articles published in the Association newsletter.
  • Submit annual budget requests and manage funds allocated for activities of the Professional Services Committee.
  • Assist the Program Committee in identifying conference topics and speakers with a focus on professional standards of practice.
